Pakistan showed improvement in their batting in the second T20I in Dunedin, where they were bowled out for just 91 in Christchurch. But their 135 for 9 in a rain-affected 15-over match was no problem for New Zealand. Captain Salman Agha was the only shining star for Pakistan. He scored 46 runs off 28 balls, which included 4 fours and 3 sixes. Shadab Khan (26 off 14 balls) also played briskly, but he too was dismissed by Duffy. Wickets continued to fall from the other end, with James Neesham dismissing Jahandad Khan and Abdul Samad in the 13th over. Finally, Shaheen Afridi scored an unbeaten 22 off 14 balls, which included a six and two fours, to take Pakistan to a defendable score, but it was not enough.
The run chase began with Shaheen Afridi’s maiden over, which was against Tim Seifert. But in the very next over, Finn Allen (38 off 16 balls) gave New Zealand a quick start by hitting three sixes off Mohammad Ali. In the third over, Seifert hit Shaheen for four sixes, including a huge one at deep mid-wicket. At the end of three overs, New Zealand were 44/0, and the match was almost in their hands.
Pakistan tried to make a comeback. Mohammad Ali dismissed Seifert (45 off 22 balls), his first T20 wicket. Jahandad Khan had Allen lbw, and Mark Chapman (1 off 6 balls) was out after a slow spell. Haris Rauf dismissed Neesham (5) in the ninth over, with 39 runs remaining. Pakistan looked hopeful, but Shadab Khan dropped an easy catch from Mitchell Hay. However, they later made amends by taking a brilliant diving catch from Daryl Mitchell (14 off 14 balls).
The fact is that the early sizzling batting of Allen and Seifert gave New Zealand such a lead that the run rate never became an issue. Mitchell Haye (21 off 16 balls) and captain Michael Bracewell (4) calmly guided the team to victory. Bracewell ended the match with a four off Jahandad Khan.
