This is the story of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who made a strong comeback in 2024 and put their old troubles behind them. They have been struggling to find a new captain and leadership in the last few years, especially after parting ways with David Warner. But just when it seemed they were set for another unsuccessful season, they brought in Pat Cummins. Along with him came Australian batsman Travis Head and coach Daniel Vettori, with whom Cummins already had a good rapport.
With a new mind, a new mindset, SRH decided to do something new in their batting style. They adopted a strategy of scoring as many runs as possible in the powerplay and hitting sixes. This aggressive play took them to the final for the first time since 2018. But with the big auction for 2025 just around the corner, the team’s style could have been temporary. Fortunately, the new retention rules allowed them to retain their best performing players.
SRH has spent a big chunk of its budget on experienced players and brought in Mohammed Shami and Harshal Patel to replace Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan. Most importantly, they still have one of the most dangerous batting lineups in the tournament. Four of the best batsmen have been part of the team since last season, while this time Ishan Kishan has also joined, who can further strengthen the batting line-up.

Injury and Availability Issues
SRH have brought in South African player Viaan Mulder to replace injured all-rounder Brydon Carse. The good news is that Pat Cummins, who recently missed the Champions Trophy due to injury, will be fully fit to lead the team. Nitesh Reddy, who was injured in the series against England, has also returned to fitness.

Ishan Kishan:
Ishan Kishan has been dropped from the Indian team in recent years, even missing out on the 2024 T20 World Cup squad. But he is now back in form and performing well in domestic cricket for Jharkhand. If he puts up a strong performance in the IPL, his chances of making a comeback in the Indian team could increase, especially ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Abhimanyu Manohar:
Abhimanyu Manohar is an aggressive batsman who is expected to get more opportunities this season. In 2024, he scored 550 runs in 11 innings in the Maharaja T20 League, at a strike rate of 195. He hit 57 sixes during that time, 27 more than the second-placed batsman. His style of play fits well with SRH’s aggressive batting policy, so he could prove to be a great finisher.
Fixtures and start of the season
SRH will get to play five of their opening eight matches at their home ground, where they were very successful last season. The first two matches are in Hyderabad, the third in Visakhapatnam, while the other two are in Mumbai and other cities. There will be a long break between their matches in April, which will allow the players to freshen up.
A highlight on home ground
Batting at SRH’s home ground last season was nothing short of a nightmare for bowlers. The run-rate here was 9.99, which was lower only by Delhi (10.76). The same trend is likely to continue this year, especially as the team takes the field with the same aggressive strategy.
